A visit to New Orleans
Free-flowing green, purple and gold in wintertime can only mean one thing - it's Mardi Gras in New Orleans, America's best party city. And with NOLA hosting Super Bowl XLVII within ten days of Mardi Gras in 2013 as an added bonus, the excitement will reach even greater heights. One of the nation's richest culinary, cultural and artistic cities anytime of year, New Orleans really parties on Fat Tuesday. The Big Easy attracts up to ten million tourists per year - no mean feat considering the greater metro area is home to around 1.1 million residents. Translation: New Orleans takes its role as host seriously. |

Super Bowl XLVII: Is there any better place to attend the Super Bowl than in the Superdome in New Orleans? Hosting the game for the tenth time this year, The Big Easy will offer plenty of distractions for Ravens and 49ers - not least being the Mardi Gras leadup, which will be in full swing. With a halftime show featuring Beyoncé and collaboration from Jay-Z and a reunited Destiny's Child, Super Bowl XLVII won't disappoint.

Mardi Gras: Described as the world's greatest party, Mardi Gras in New Orleans takes place on February 12 this year. The celebration peaks for about two weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday. If that doesn't fit your schedule, you can still join the fun as more than 60 parades and hundreds of private parties, dances and masked balls are annually scheduled in greater New Orleans starting on January 19 running all the way through Mardi Gras. Most hotels during Mardi Gras require a five-day stay and many start booking rooms in August. You may still land a cancellation in January, so be persistent if you don't yet have accommodation.

Bourbon Street: No visit to New Orleans is complete without a stroll along Bourbon Street - ground zero for the city's best-known bars, restaurants, music venues and shops - not to mention Mardi Gras itself. At night, they block the street for pedestrian-only access. You can explore Bourbon Street and environs by cab, trolley, bicycle or even horse-drawn carriage. But many find going by foot to be the most enjoyable as the party spills right into the street (there are no laws against open containers in public here). So stop in for a Hurricane at Pat O'Briens or recover over a morning coffee and beignet at Café du Monde - after all, when is the next time you'll be on Bourbon Street?

Historic French Market Located on the same French Quarter site since 1791, the French Market encompasses several open-air markets into one enormous, bustling mass of humanity and alluring smells, sounds and sights. Originally a Native American trading post, the French Market starts at Café du Monde and stretches along Decatur and North Peters streets all the way to the downtown edge of the French Quarter. Post-Katrina renovations were completed in late 2009, and today, you'll find everything from fresh produce and muffulettas, to touristy souvenirs, hand-made crafts and, naturally, beads. Retail shops are open daily from 10-6 with the farmers market and flea market opening an hour earlier.

Live Music in the Frenchmen Section: This two-block-long live entertainment district is within walking distance of Bourbon Street, but a world away. This part of the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood, bordering the French Quarter, houses nearly a dozen bars and clubs largely frequented by locals (perhaps because drinks are cheaper than on Bourbon St. and admission is usually free). Just cross Esplanade Ave. at Decatur street and you are there - or let your ears guide you.

Ride a Streetcar: Seeing historic New Orleans by authentic streetcar will transport you back to the 19th century. There are three different lines: St. Charles, Canal Street, and the Riverfront, each of which originates downtown but takes you different parts of the city. The St. Charles line is the oldest continuously running streetcar in the world, in operation for over 150 years.

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport: MSY is located just 12 miles (19 km) from downtown New Orleans. MSY serves some 8.5 million passengers annually. In 2008, U.S. News & World Report ranked MSY as the 4th-best travel experience among the 47 busiest U.S. airports, based on the relatively small number of flight delays and frequently lower onboard flight loads. MSY airport is connected to downtown New Orleans by bus (Jefferson Transit bus E-2) and taxi.
