What's on in Austin
They say everything's big in Texas, and Austin is no exception. Located deep in the heart of the Lone Star State, this funky college town of more than 820,000 people is home to a diverse population, vibrant economy, the Texas State Capitol and the University of Texas flagship campus.
Austin is also well known for its thriving music and arts scene. Walk along the popular Sixth Street corridor and you'll quickly discover why Austin earned the nickname "Live Music Capitol of the World." And every March, Austin becomes the premier travel destination for technology, music and film geeks worldwide, as nearly 20,000 people attend the acclaimed South By Southwest conference and festival.

Things you can do:
-
Sixth Street Entertainment District: The heart and soul of Austin's live music scene, Sixth Street attracts an eclectic crowd with its unique blend of music venues, bars, restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques. While strolling down this trendy avenue, visitors are bound to see something they've never seen before, giving credence to the local slogan, "Keep Austin Weird."
-
Darrell K. Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium: If there's one thing Texans love it's University of Texas football. On game day, Austin is awash in a sea of orange as the Longhorn faithful come out to cheer on their favorite team. The Darrell K. Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium at the sprawling main campus has been home to some of the biggest games in college football. Just one touchdown and you'll find yourself joining the crowd in screaming, "Hook 'em Horns."
-
Texas Capitol Building: With all of Austin's cultural attractions, it's easy to overlook that the city is the seat of Texas state politics. A National Historic Landmark, the halls of the Texas Capitol Building have long been a launching pad for D.C. powerbrokers as well as a future President. Originally built in 1888, this extraordinary building is known for its unique architecture and features a rotunda portraying all the past governors of Texas. Tours of the building are available year-round.
-
Stubbs BBQ: If you're looking for a good old fashioned, down home Texas BBQ joint, Stubbs is one of the best. Offering reasonable prices and a rustic atmosphere, Stubbs attracts both locals and visitors alike. Their legendary stage has hosted some of the biggest names in music, including James Brown, Willie Nelson, REM, Snoop Dogg and Metallica.
-
Stevie Ray Vaughan Statue: No stop in Austin is complete until you pay a visit to the statue of Austin's favorite son, late guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughan. Overlooking the scenic banks of the Colorado River, the statue pays homage to Stevie Ray's remarkable career and continuing influence on the Austin music scene.
-
Long Center for the Performing Arts: Located downtown, the Long Center for the Performing Arts labels itself "Austin's Creative Home." It's easy to see why with their extensive programming lineup. Visitors can watch everything from ballet, symphony and opera to Shakespeare, tap dance and outdoor concerts. Not only is the top local artistic talent found here, but some of the best views as well. Shutterbugs flock to the Long Center City Terrace to take in the scenic views of Austin's skyline and Lady Bird Lake.
